When should a dynamic microphone be used, and in what situations would a condenser be more appropriate? |

Dynamic or Condenser Mic? Both types of microphone have their place in a modern recording studio, whether a home or a high tech professional studio - Our discussion will be centred on the relative characteristics of dynamic and condenser microphones, and which microphone is suitable for which applications. Condenser microphones have a better frequency response and sensitivity, and are generally of a better quality. The dynamic microphone uses moving-coil technology, making the diaphragm heavy and less responsive. The condenser picks up subtle noises and sounds generally cleaner and crisper. There are many applications where a less-responsive microphone is ideal. For live singing with a band, the dynamic does not pick up so much of the extraneous sounds from the surrounding instruments around the singer. The dynamic is also better-suited for instruments (even in the studio) with a high attack volume (eg. drums). The dynamic is naturally able to handle higher SPL (sound pressure level), the condenser requires additional attenuation control for this type of instrument.
In the studio, a condenser microphone with its higher quality characteristics is generally preferred. Condensers often come with switches to change the way the microphone operates. They often have variable polar patterns, high-pass filters, bass roll-off and attenuation control. A good example is the TLM170. Now you have read about some of the characteristics, have a look at the 'what microphone?' section of this web site for details of specific microphones currently on the market (and some classics you will have to search hard for). |

Please note that comments on the microphone information pages are opinion gathered from a variety of different sources, the guide prices are only a rough estimate. We would urge you to do your own research before purchasing any microphone. |
