Boundary Microphones

A boundary microphone works on the principle that at a boundary, sound pressure level doubles. These mic's should be placed on a large flat surface avoiding reflective surfaces other than the boundary surface itself.

Shure Microflex

Surface-mounted back-electret microphones ideal for stage floors, lecterns or conference tables. They are particularly adept at picking up speech and may be configured with cardoid, supercardoid or omni-directional cartridges to suit a specific application.

The MX300 series cartridges can be used in the following applications:

  • Cardoid: General sound reinforcement.
  • Supercardoid: Sound reinforcement where a narrow, distant field requires coverage.
  • Omni-directional: Recording or remote monitoring .

PZM

The PZM is a very popular microphone coming in various forms, manufactured under licence, you may see it bearing a 'Realistic' badge or 'Crown'. Typically a PZM will be deployed on a floor, wall, ceiling or a table and the low frequency response of the mic is largely dependent on the size of the boundary.

This mic is ideally suited to percussive instrumentation such as drums or piano and can be found in many applications auch as mic'ing a full orchestra or teleconferencing or even in the interview room of a police-station.

Please note that comments on the microphone information pages are opinion gathered from a variety of different sources. We would urge you to do your own research before purchasing a microphone.
