Introduction

There are a number of different ways of carrying out this task, including buying specific hardware such as a cassette player than you can fit directly to a PC, or a USB turntable. We are going explore how this can be done with your existing hardware, looking at the general principles first, then the detail.

In general terms you are trying to convert an 'analogue' signal into a digital form. This task will involve the following:

1. Analogue source (tape player, radio, turntable etc...)

2. The soundcard of your PC

3. Software on your PC

Once the information is captured in digital format, software can be used to convert to other digital formats (MP3, OGG VORBIS, WMA etc.) or burn the files onto a CD.

There are some points which need to be made before we get started on converting our sounds into digital format. Firstly, there may be copyright issues involved in this process, check out the copyright page to ensure that you are clear about this. LiVEWYRE studio does not encourage or condone the illegal duplication of copyrighted material for distribution by any means. Secondly, the quality of the final product will be largely dependant on the quality of the original material and the quality of the system you play it through. If your tape is warped or stretched you will probably be wasting your time, the same applies to a faulty tape player or ropey cabling.

OK, that said, let's begin to take a look at the 'nuts & bolts' of turning your tapes into CD's in STEP ONE - 'Getting Started'.
