In general terms you are trying to convert an 'analogue' signal into a digital form. This task will involve the following:

1. Analogue source (tape player, radio, turntable etc...)

2. The soundcard of your PC

3. Software on your PC

Once the information is captured in digital format, software can be used to convert to other digital formats (MP3, OGG VORBIS, WMA etc.) or burn the files onto a CD.
